- HARD HATS ARE THE ORDER OF THE DAY at Metro Square which is undergoing
- total revamping to accommodate several major state agencies. We welcome
- new neighbors including the Department of Trade and Economic Development,
- Tourism, the Public Utilities Commission and the Public Service Department
- to the neighborhood. We will also be expanding the Metronet office space
- so that we can have our own in-house meeting facility. There will be major
- upheaval for a few weeks. If we miss your phone call or don't answer a fax
- or MetroLine request, please bear with us. We should be back to normal by
- the end of October.

- Meanwhile, the Metropolitan Library Service Agency (MELSA) is moving: As
- of October 15 the new location for MELSA will be the Hamline Park Plaza,

- THE LIBRARY TASK FORCE OF THE MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. HOLIDAY COMMISSION is
- looking for "successes," reports of activities that libraries of all types
- have initiated to honor the MLK Holiday. The plan is to compile the good
- ideas (exhibits, programs, bibliographies and other publications) and
- distribute tip sheets to libraries in early December. Send ideas to
- Metronet by October 15; we'll forward them to the Task Force. [Note that
- the MLK Holiday is January 20, 1993; the Holiday Week will be celebrated
- throughout Minnesota January 13-20.]

- "Off the Shelf and On-Line" explores the computer's partnership with the

- % The Minnesota Women's Press begins its fifth year of book groups in
- September. Seventeen fall quarter groups will read and discuss an
- interesting variety of authors and topics ranging from Barbara Kingsolver
- to Jane Smiley, Ursula LeGuin and the feminist classics listed in Ms
- magazine's 20th anniversary issue. Choices include daytime, evening and
- weekend opportunities, one month to year-long formats. Contact the MWP

- announces publication of the 5th annual edition of the Minnesota Women's
- Press Directory; 40,000 copies of the publication were distributed

- % The Minnesota Book Awards '93 planning committee held its first planning
- session in mid-September. The committee is seeking ideas, judges,

- Metronet is sponsoring two INTERNET WORKSHOPS with Dr. Dana Noonan for
- October 29 and November 17 from 1:00 - 3:30 p.m. at Metropolitan State

- State: SEARCHING ONLINE LIBRARY CATALOGS is scheduled for two options
- for reservations. Dana will also offer two workshops of interest at Metro

- For the first time in many years the new academic year begins with library
- science students on several campuses in the Twin Cities. The College of St.
- Catherine/Rosary graduate program welcomes 46 new students while 80+
- students are enrolled in the CSC Information Management Program. For full

- Library as an Adult Education Agency" will again be offered by Nancy J.

- Home Box Office is distributing a booklist of titles suggested by the
- American Library Association in connection with a new series titled
- "Lifestories: Families in Crisis" focusing on eating disorders, data rape,

- Joey Rodger, Chief Operating Officer of the Urban Libraries Council and
- immediate past Executive Director of the Public Library Association, will
- keynote the Fourth Annual Meeting of the Hennepin County Library Foundation
- on Thursday, November 5. There's a reception at 5:00 followed by Ms

- Grand Opening at the Minnesota History Center is set for October 15-18.
- Hours in the Research Center are restricted somewhat to accommodate the
- celebrations. Call before you make the trip. Or, better yet, visit the
- History Center, the Research Center, and the fabulous exhibits set to open
- during the week. The Research Center is also introducing a new
- publication, the Gazette, which provides updates on services, lists new
- acquisitions and shares tidbits about the Research Center. If you're

- John Plocker of Blue Earth is the new President of the Minnesota State
- Board of Education. Kathleen Muellerleile of Owatonna is Vice President.
- The Board is responsible for establishing policy for Minnesota education
- including schools, public libraries and the state's multitype library
- cooperation program.

- Colors magazine, a journal of opinion by writers of color, is seeking
- reviews and criticism of new works by artists of color in many media,
- including theater, literature, film, music, architecture and the visual

- "Together is better...Let's Read" is the theme for ALA's 1993 national
- reading program. The program features the illustrations of James
- Stevenson; Stevenson's "Grandpa" character will encourage young people to
- read to each other and with older friends and family. Libraries

- Nowell Leitzke is the new president of the Minnesota Association of Library
- Friends, installed at MALF's annual conference on September 18. At the same
- conference MALF further developed its regional structure and program plans

- Study circles/roundtables, National Issues Forums -- they're integrated and
- complementary efforts to involve a broad public in informed discussion of
- public issues. Jeremy Iggers' multi-part series began September l in the
- Star Tribune and will continue through the next several months. Spots
- began on MPR September 14 with the first MidDay set for October 7. Over
- 60 community educators, librarians, Extension staff and other organizers
- participated in a training session on August 28; another 120 Minnesotans
- gave up a Saturday (September 12) to learn more about the process.
- Mountains of information have been distributed to libraries throughout the

- "Roots in Denmark; Danish Picture Books" will be on exhibit at the U of M
- Children's Research Collection Arthur Upson Room in Walter Library October
